Abu Dhabi’s Autonomous Racing League Heads to Italy for Its First International Race

Abu Dhabi’s Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is set to make history once again as it stages its first-ever international race on 5 September 2026 at the legendary Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari (Imola) in Italy.

After two groundbreaking seasons at Yas Marina Circuit, the AI-powered racing championship is taking its next major step onto the global stage, bringing up to five fully autonomous Dallara Super Formula SF23 race cars to one of the world’s most technically demanding circuits.

Organised by ASPIRE, the grand challenges arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), A2RL has rapidly evolved from an ambitious research initiative into one of the world’s most exciting showcases of autonomous mobility, artificial intelligence and high-performance engineering.

The Imola event marks the championship’s first race outside the UAE before the series returns to Abu Dhabi later this year for the 2026 season finale at Yas Marina Circuit.

Some of the World’s Best AI Racing Teams Will Compete

Leading the grid will be defending champions TUM (Germany), alongside Unimore Racing (Italy) and PoliMOVE (Italy), all of whom secured their places through performances during the 2025 championship.

They’ll be joined by two additional teams selected through qualifying events ahead of race weekend, with Kinetiz (UAE) and Constructor Racing (Germany) battling for the remaining spots on the grid.

Why Imola Is the Ultimate Test

Known for hosting the European Le Mans Series, Imola is regarded as one of motorsport’s most iconic circuits. Its narrow layout, elevation changes, limited run-off areas and challenging overtaking opportunities make it one of the toughest tracks for both human and autonomous drivers.

For AI-powered race cars, the circuit presents an even greater challenge. Autonomous systems will need to process vast amounts of data in real time while managing grip levels, racing lines, traffic, overtaking decisions and split-second strategy at speeds exceeding 250 km/h.

From Concept to Competitive Reality

Since launching in Abu Dhabi in 2024, A2RL has quickly become one of the world’s leading autonomous motorsport competitions.

What began as a four-car autonomous race has evolved into a six-car championship featuring close wheel-to-wheel racing, while one of the competition’s biggest milestones has been the rapid improvement of autonomous driving performance against professional racing drivers.

The gap between AI systems and human drivers has fallen dramatically – from 10 seconds in 2024 to just 1.58 seconds in 2025 – highlighting the rapid pace of development in autonomous racing technology.

Beyond the track, the championship has also attracted growing international attention while reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a global hub for artificial intelligence, robotics and future mobility.

AI Training Begins Before the Race

Long before the cars arrive in Italy, teams will prepare through A2RL’s Sim Sprint virtual championship.

Running from 19 May to 17 July, the simulator series allows teams to develop and refine their autonomous driving algorithms across highly detailed digital versions of Yas Marina Circuit, A2RL Autodrome, Suzuka, Imola and the Yas Marina North Circuit.

The virtual programme recreates real racing conditions, including overtaking scenarios, multi-car battles, incident management and unpredictable race situations that are difficult to replicate safely on track. During the previous season alone, participating teams completed more than 5,000 hours of combined simulation testing.

Inspiring the Next Generation of AI Talent

Ahead of the Imola race, A2RL has also been engaging Italy’s motorsport and engineering communities through Motor Valley Fest and university roadshows at the University of Bologna, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and Politecnico di Milano.

The initiative introduces students to autonomous racing, artificial intelligence and high-speed engineering while encouraging future engineers, software developers and coders to become part of the rapidly growing championship.

Following its Italian debut, A2RL will return to Yas Marina Circuit to conclude the 2026 season, bringing the championship back to the city where autonomous racing first became a reality.
