Abu Dhabi Strengthens Its Mental Health Ecosystem with Expanded Access and Early Intervention
Mental health is increasingly being recognised as an essential part of overall wellbeing, and Abu Dhabi is taking significant steps to make support more accessible across the emirate. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH)has announced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening a comprehensive mental health ecosystem, shifting the focus from reactive treatment to prevention, early intervention and continuous care.
The latest developments reflect Abu Dhabi’s long-term commitment to ensuring mental health services are easier to access, better integrated into everyday healthcare, and available without stigma or unnecessary barriers.
Expanding Mental Health Services Across Abu Dhabi
Today, Abu Dhabi is home to 143 mental health facilities, including 13 specialised centres, supported by 640 qualified mental health professionals. Since 2022, the number of mental health specialists has increased by 81%, with plans already underway to double patient capacity over the next two years to meet growing demand.
One of the biggest changes has been the integration of mental health services into Primary Care Centres, making support available closer to where people live.
To support this approach, more than 1,930 family physicians have been trained to diagnose and manage common conditions such as anxiety and depression, allowing patients to receive early care while ensuring referrals to specialists whenever needed.
Investing in Innovative Care
Alongside expanding access, Abu Dhabi is also introducing advanced treatment options to improve patient outcomes.
Among them is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive and non-pharmacological therapy that offers an additional treatment pathway for people who do not respond to medication. The emirate has also introduced 19 patient outcome indicators and integrated digital care pathways covering 80% of the mental health burden, helping improve continuity of care and monitor long-term outcomes.
Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health
Beyond clinical care, the Department of Health is working with government partners to encourage open conversations around mental wellbeing.
Initiatives led by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), including Beauty of Our Minds, aim to reduce stigma, promote awareness and encourage individuals to seek support when needed. Together, these programmes reflect a broader vision where mental health is viewed as an essential part of everyday wellbeing rather than something addressed only during times of crisis.
By combining expanded access, early diagnosis, innovative treatments and community awareness, Abu Dhabi continues to build a more inclusive mental health system-one that places prevention, compassion and long-term wellbeing at the centre of healthcare.
