Yas Mall Becomes First in the Middle East to Introduce the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme
Yas Mall has become the first mall in the Middle East to officially adopt the globally recognised Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme-bringing a new layer of awareness and empathy into everyday public spaces.
At the centre of this initiative is something simple-a green lanyard with a sunflower symbol.
But what it represents is much bigger.
The programme is designed for individuals with non-visible conditions-ranging from autism and anxiety to chronic illnesses and sensory sensitivities. These are conditions that aren’t immediately obvious, but can significantly affect how someone experiences crowded, fast-paced environments like malls.
By wearing the sunflower lanyard, visitors can subtly indicate that they may need a little more time, patience, or support-without having to explain themselves.
What Yas Mall Is Doing Differently
What makes this more than just a symbolic rollout is how deeply it’s been integrated.
At Yas Mall, the programme isn’t limited to awareness-it’s embedded into operations. Customer-facing staff have been trained to recognize the sunflower symbol and respond with appropriate support, ensuring a more consistent and inclusive experience across the mall.
To support the initiative, around 10,000 sunflower lanyards have also been introduced, produced by People of Determination through local workshops-adding another layer of community involvement. This forms part of Aldar’s broader accessibility roadmap, with Yas Mall contributing to Yas Island’s commitment to becoming an inclusive city and supporting the wider inclusion agenda led by the Department of Community Development.
It’s not just about introducing a concept, but actually making it work in real, everyday interactions.
His Excellency Abdulla Ismail Al Kamali, Executive Director for People of Determination Sector at the Zayed Authority for People of Determination, affirmed that the implementation of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme at Yas Mall represents a positive step that strengthens Abu Dhabi’s global leadership as an inclusive and disability-friendly city. His Excellency noted that the initiative reflects a developmental approach that places quality of life and human empowerment at the forefront of priorities.
