NYU Abu Dhabi select’s 87 Emirati Students for Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship
A new group of talented Emirati students is preparing for an intensive academic journey at NYU Abu Dhabi, with 87 high-achieving secondary school students selected for the Class of 2027 Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarship for Outstanding High School Students.
The students will participate in the university’s 18-month Summer Academy enrichment programme, designed to prepare promising young Emiratis for admission to and success at some of the world’s leading universities.
Now entering its 16th year, the programme recognises students for both academic excellence and leadership potential.
What Does the 18-Month Programme Include?
The Summer Academy begins during the summer following Grade 10 or Year 11 and combines two intensive summer sessions in Abu Dhabi with academic enrichment throughout the school year.
During each summer, students spend five weeks at NYU Abu Dhabi studying areas including critical thinking and academic writing. They also participate in dedicated leadership and public speaking courses, alongside language and mathematics test preparation.
The programme extends beyond traditional classroom learning, with co-curricular activities designed to develop communication, collaboration and leadership skills.
Experience University-Level Study at NYU Abu Dhabi
One of the particularly interesting aspects of the scholarship is the opportunity for students to experience university-level academics and research before completing secondary school.
During their first summer, participants visit NYU Abu Dhabi research centres, where they are introduced to emerging areas of study and explore how research and innovation can be applied to global challenges.
In their second summer, students progress to an undergraduate-level NYU Abu Dhabi Track Course, adapted specifically for Summer Academy participants.
Available disciplines include areas such as engineering, biological sciences and entrepreneurship, with learning delivered through laboratory work, projects, field trips and classroom instruction.
Preparing Students for Leading Global Universities
Support continues throughout the academic year through online classes and refresher weekends.
As participants enter Grade 12 or Year 13, the programme also helps them navigate the university application process, including researching institutions, developing application essays and completing their submissions.
Previous Summer Academy alumni have gone on to study at institutions including Yale, Princeton, NYU New York, NYU Abu Dhabi, the London School of Economics, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and King’s College London.
H.H. Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan highlighted the programme’s role in nurturing academic excellence, critical thinking and leadership while enabling young people to pursue opportunities at leading universities and remain connected to the UAE’s values and aspirations.
The latest Class of 2027 continues that objective, providing another generation of Emirati students with academic preparation, university exposure and leadership development as they plan their next educational steps.
