Zayed National Museum Brings Emirati History and Heritage to Communities Across the UAE

Museums aren’t just places to preserve history-they can also spark conversations, strengthen communities and bring cultural stories to life. That’s the idea behind Zayed National Museum’s nationwide outreach programme, which has successfully completed its inaugural edition after engaging communities across all seven emirates through a series of public discussions and workshops celebrating the UAE’s rich heritage.

Delivered between April and June 2026 under the museum’s Multaqa Zayed National Museum initiative, the programme, titled “From Museum to Community: A Living Cultural Dialogue Across the Emirates,” partnered with cultural institutions and community organisations to make Emirati history more accessible through dialogue, storytelling and shared experiences.

Celebrating Local Stories Across the Emirates

Each stop on the programme explored a different aspect of the UAE’s cultural identity, connecting local heritage with the country’s broader national story.

Sessions included:

  • Dubai: Exploring the UAE’s maritime heritage at Al Shindagha Museum, alongside a second discussion at Alserkal Avenue examining symbols, identity and cultural connections across the Arabian Peninsula.
  • Ajman: Archaeological discoveries revealing the emirate’s historic trade links through ancient Carnelian beads.
  • Al Ain: An intergenerational conversation on how museums preserve family stories and cultural memory.
  • Sharjah: Discussions on the role of museums and knowledge spaces in educating future generations.
  • Ras Al Khaimah: Exploring mountain communities, oral traditions and the region’s living heritage.
  • Fujairah: Conversations highlighting how personal stories help preserve local history.
  • Umm Al Quwain: Examining the archaeological significance of Ed-Dur, one of the region’s most important ancient coastal trading settlements.

To ensure accessibility, every session included Emirati Sign Language interpretation, creating an inclusive environment for participants across the country.

History Beyond Museum Walls

As the national museum of the UAE, Zayed National Museum continues to expand its role beyond traditional exhibitions by creating opportunities for communities to engage directly with the nation’s history.

Through travelling programmes, research initiatives, educational activities and public events, the museum aims to preserve Emirati heritage while encouraging meaningful conversations between generations and across communities.

The outreach programme reflects a growing belief that history is not only preserved inside museum galleries but also lives within people’s memories, traditions and shared experiences-ensuring that the stories shaping the UAE continue to inspire future generations.

Social With Shefali is where I open up about the things that inspire me, the practices that keep me grounded, and the experiences that make life feel a little more beautiful. I’m not here to be perfect, polished, or performative. I’m here to be real. To remind myself (and maybe you too) that balance, joy, and chosen connections are worth making space for.
