The distinctive blue museum building takes inspiration from Husain’s own sketch for a cultural space in Doha. Architect Martand Khosla subsequently brought the concept to life, giving the museum itself a direct connection to Husain’s creative vision.
Inside, the experience traces the different influences, ideas and periods that shaped his career, bringing multiple dimensions of his artistic life together under one roof.
Rather than functioning simply as a gallery of paintings, Lawh wa Qalam uses architecture, artworks and interactive installations to immerse visitors in Husain’s world.
Step Inside Husain’s Creative World
The museum experience begins in a reception space inspired by Husain’s home and studio, immediately introducing a more personal dimension to the artist.
Visitors then enter an immersive 360-degree room, where his recognisable brushstrokes are brought to life around them.
Across the galleries is a diverse collection encompassing paintings, photography, tapestries, sculptures and watercolours from different stages of Husain’s career.
Among the works visitors can discover are The Artist and His Model, Doll’s Wedding and pieces from India’s 100 Years of Struggle for Freedom.
The museum also incorporates interactive elements. A Praxinoscope presents scenes from Husain’s films, while a periscope provides panoramic views across Education City.
Another gallery, A Curious Mind, explores the artist’s fascination with subjects including faith, history and civilisation through works such as Theorama and World Religions.

One of the most significant parts of Lawh wa Qalam is its exploration of Husain’s relationship with Qatar, where he spent the later years of his life.
During this period, Husain began one of his most ambitious artistic projects: a proposed collection of 99 paintings exploring Arab and Islamic civilisation.
He completed more than 30 works before his death in 2011.
Pieces including Warriors and Poets and Zuljanah Horse provide visitors with a glimpse into this final period of his artistic journey and the ideas he was exploring while living in Qatar.
Bringing these works into the wider story of his career also gives the museum a particularly meaningful connection to its location, positioning Qatar not simply as the home of the museum but as part of Husain’s own creative history.
More Than an Art Museum
Lawh wa Qalam extends its experience beyond its permanent galleries through educational and community programming.
By the end of June 2026, the museum had organised close to 50 workshops and learning activities, engaging more than 700 participants through school programmes as well as family and community sessions.
Visitors can also explore a library, auditorium, creativity hub and gift shop, while a café outside the museum provides a place to stop before or after a visit.
