Dubai is mourning the passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, brother of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The Court of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced on Monday, 21 September 2026, that Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum had passed away earlier this morning.
Following the announcement, 10 days of official mourning have been declared in Dubai, beginning today. UAE flags across the emirate will be flown at half-mast during the mourning period.
Sheikh Mohammed Pays Tribute to His Brother
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum shared a deeply personal tribute to his brother following the announcement of his passing.
In his message, Sheikh Mohammed prayed for mercy for Sheikh Ahmed and reflected on how, although he is no longer present in sight, he will remain in the prayers and hearts of those who loved him. He also prayed for patience and solace for his family and loved ones.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, also mourned his uncle, offering prayers for mercy and forgiveness.
Dubai Enters a Period of Official Mourning
The announcement has brought Dubai into a period of mourning, with flags lowered to half-mast across the emirate for the next 10 days.
