UAE Travellers Are Leaving Summer Plans Later and Prioritising Flexibility, Says Skyscanner
Summer travel remains high on the agenda for UAE residents, but the way people are planning their holidays is changing. Rather than locking in trips months in advance, travellers are increasingly taking a more flexible approach, prioritising convenience, adaptable itineraries, and easier planning experiences.
New insights from Skyscanner reveal that while many UAE residents are still planning to travel this summer, the focus is shifting from simply choosing a destination to creating a smoother and less stressful travel experience from start to finish.
Last-Minute Planning Is Becoming the New Normal
According to the findings, only 30% of UAE travellers have already booked their summer holidays, while nearly half (47%) are still actively planning their trips.
The trend suggests that travellers are becoming more comfortable making decisions closer to departure dates, allowing them greater flexibility when it comes to destinations, flight routes, budgets, and travel companions.
Only 6% of respondents said they are not planning to travel this summer, highlighting the continued appetite for travel despite changing planning habits.
Convenience Is Now a Major Priority
For today’s traveller, planning a holiday involves far more than simply booking a flight.
Many are juggling multiple considerations, from coordinating family schedules and group budgets to comparing different flight routes, layovers, accommodation options, and transport arrangements.
As a result, travellers are increasingly looking for platforms that help simplify the decision-making process rather than simply displaying travel options.
Features that allow users to compare flights, hotels, and car hire services in one place are becoming increasingly valuable as travellers seek greater clarity and convenience throughout their planning journey.
UAE Travellers Want More Control Over Their Journey
One of the clearest shifts emerging this summer is the growing importance of flexibility.
The research found that:
- 33% of UAE travellers remain flexible with their travel plans
- 27% say their trips are influenced by school holidays or fixed commitments
- 86% are interested in discovering destinations that feel new or different from places commonly seen across social media
This suggests travellers are becoming more intentional about where they go, focusing less on trending destinations and more on experiences that align with their personal interests and travel style.
Layovers Are No Longer Just an Inconvenience
Another interesting trend is how travellers are becoming more strategic about flight routes and transit experiences.
According to Skyscanner, demand for tools that help compare flight itineraries based on layovers and transit convenience has continued to grow since the introduction of its Layover Filter earlier this year.
The data also revealed that Abu Dhabi has overtaken Dubai as the most frequently selected layover airport since April, with usage peaking ahead of the Eid Al Adha travel period.
Rather than focusing solely on direct flights, many travellers are actively evaluating routes based on overall convenience, airport experience, and journey flexibility.

Group Travel Remains One of the Biggest Challenges
While travelling with family and friends can create memorable experiences, organising group trips continues to be one of the most stressful aspects of holiday planning.
The findings revealed:
- Nearly 59% of travellers believe organising a group holiday is more stressful than moving house
- 33% say agreeing on a suitable budget remains one of the biggest challenges
From coordinating schedules to selecting destinations and accommodation that suit everyone, group travel often requires significant planning and compromise.
This is one reason why integrated travel tools that allow travellers to compare multiple options in one place are becoming increasingly popular.
Travel Is Becoming More Personalised
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this year’s travel trends is that traveler’s are placing greater value on personalization and choice.
Whether it’s exploring lesser-known destinations, selecting more convenient flight routes, or keeping plans flexible until the last minute, UAE residents are increasingly looking for travel experiences that fit their individual needs rather than following predefined travel patterns.
As summer travel continues to evolve, convenience, flexibility, and confidence in decision-making are becoming just as important as the destination itself.
For travel platforms, the challenge is no longer simply helping people book a trip-it’s helping them navigate the entire planning process with less stress and more control.
