Abu Dhabi Is Getting Its Own SPHERE- And It Could Completely Transform Yas Island
Abu Dhabi is officially bringing one of the world’s most talked-about entertainment concepts to the UAE as Department of Culture and Tourism-Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment Co. announce plans for Sphere Abu Dhabi- the first Sphere venue outside the United States.
The venue will be built between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Yas Island Abu Dhabi, placing it at the heart of Abu Dhabi’s growing entertainment district alongside some of the capital’s biggest attractions and event destinations.
For anyone who has seen the now-iconic Sphere in Las Vegas dominating social media feeds with its giant LED exterior and immersive experiences, this is a major moment for the UAE’s entertainment and tourism landscape.
But Abu Dhabi’s version is expected to go beyond simply replicating the Las Vegas model.
According to officials, Sphere Abu Dhabi will combine global immersive entertainment with Emirati storytelling, regional culture, Arabic music, and local artistic talent. Plans include displaying Emirati artists’ work across the venue’s massive Exosphere LED exterior while also developing immersive experiences inspired by UAE heritage and culture.
Planned for Yas Island, the landmark project comes with a construction phase investment of US$1.7 billion and is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.
The venue will host three major categories of programming:
- Sphere Experiences featuring multi-sensory storytelling,
- large-scale concert residencies,
- And major global events ranging from combat sports and conferences to brand launches and international entertainment productions.
With a capacity of up to 20,000 people depending on event configuration, the venue is expected to become a major anchor for Abu Dhabi’s long-term tourism and entertainment strategy.
Its location also places it minutes away from Zayed International Airport, while complementing major nearby destinations including Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the upcoming Disney theme park resort on Yas Island.
Officials say the project will also create thousands of jobs once operational and further strengthen Abu Dhabi’s positioning as a global cultural and entertainment hub alongside destinations like Saadiyat Cultural District.
In many ways, Sphere Abu Dhabi feels like the next major chapter in Yas Island’s transformation – from a regional leisure destination into one of the world’s most ambitious entertainment ecosystems.
