Trying an Aerial Silk Class in Dubai: A Fitness Format That Feels Like Art in Motion
I have never been someone who enjoys traditional weight training or gym routines. While I deeply respect the discipline behind it, my body and mind have always responded better to movement-based forms of fitness — the kind that feel expressive, fluid, and a little creative.
So over time I’ve gravitated toward practices like yoga, stretching, and other forms of mindful movement.
This time, I decided to try something that had been on my curiosity list for a while — an Aerial Silk class at Aerial Lab inside Danube Resortz in Dubai.
And honestly, it turned out to be one of the most fascinating ways to move your body.
Discovering Aerial Silks at Aerial Lab, Dubai
Walking into the studio, the first thing you notice are the long silks suspended from the ceiling, creating a beautiful visual of soft fabric columns floating in the air.
Aerial silks are exactly what they sound like — a form of aerial movement where your body is supported by long fabric strands, allowing you to stretch, wrap, suspend, and sometimes even invert while performing sequences in the air.
It is a mix of:
- yoga
- strength training
- flexibility work
- dance-like flow
- body awareness
What surprised me most was how graceful the movement feels, even though it engages muscles you didn’t even know existed.
Why Aerial Movement Feels Different From Traditional Workouts
For someone like me who isn’t naturally drawn to lifting weights, aerial fitness feels very different.
Some of the benefits I experienced and later learned about include:
• Improved core strength – almost every move requires engaging the core to stay balanced in the air
• Better flexibility and mobility – the fabric allows deeper stretches than floor exercises
• Upper body strength development – especially arms, shoulders, and back
• Posture improvement – hanging and elongating the spine helps counter desk posture
• Mental focus – because you are learning sequences, your mind stays fully present
The experience feels less like a workout and more like learning a new body language.

A Class That Works for Different Levels
One thing I appreciated about the session was how inclusive the class structure was.
There were people at different levels:
- complete beginners
- people with some aerial experience
- a few students who were clearly more advanced
The instructor took time to modify movements and routines based on each person’s comfort level.
For beginners like me, the focus was on:
- basic wraps
- learning how to grip the silk
- simple inversions
- controlled stretches
While the more experienced participants practiced more complex sequences.
